Samsung leads Indian Smartphone Market, Micromax closes

Korean major Samsung led the Indian smartphone market with 23% share in the quarter ended June, though No. 2 Micromax narrowed the gap, even as Chinese vendors such as Xiaomi, Lenovo, Huawei and Gionee made significant inroads into the fiercely competitive market, with their shipments tripling on year, as per International Data Corporation (IDC).

IDC data revealed 26.5 million smartphones were shipped to India in the April-June period, up 44% from last year, while sequent .

Chinese smartphone players accounted for 12% of the total Indian smartphone market in the second quarter, double from a year ago. The plethora of Chinese players that tripled shipments on year have also doubled their shipments sequentially as well.

“As China started to slow down, most vendors from the country have targeted India as the next big growth market for smartphones,” said Kiranjeet Kaur, research manager with IDC’s Asia/Pacific mobile phone team, adding that the key to success  she said.

Counterpoint Research, which came out with second quarter numbers last month, said the India smartphone segment grew 34% on-year and 25% sequentially clocking 25 million units.

Samsung led the charge with 24.5%, followed by Micromax with 16.7% at No 2. Fast growing Intex took the No 3 spot with 9.9% share, Lenovo, including Motorola, was at No 4 with 7.5%, and Lava with 5.3% at No 5.

IDC analyats said that for Samsung, volume growth on-year as per their data, came from affordable phones such as  Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon.

“At the same time, they also focused on bringing more 4G phones at affordable $100-150 price points which is left unattended by Indian and global vendors,” she said.
