Possibly not the best choice for those scared of heights, the Embassy Gardens building in the Nine Elms development on the south bank of the River Thames will feature a “sky pool” at the 10th storey with see-through walls and flooring.
Stretching across two buildings, the design will enable residents to swim over London and look down below through eight-inch glass.
Using eight-inch-thick glass, the so-called “sky pool” appears to float in the air and resembles a giant aquarium.
It will be for the private use of residents, who will be able to swim from one building to the next and enjoy a dramatic vista of the Palace of Westminster and the London Eye. The linked sky deck at the top of the two buildings will have a summer bar and sun loungers, a spa and orangery.
About 27.5 metres long and six metres wide, the concept is the brainchild of Eco World Ballymore director Sean Mulryan, in conjunction with architects Arup Associates.
The development will also include a spa, sky deck, bar and orangery.
Britain’s Architect Journal reported that rumours of the “Sky Pool” had circulated as early as 2014.
The vision is being realised by aquarium designer Reynolds and engineers Eckersley O’Callaghan.
Prices for apartments within the skyscraper start at £602,000 (AU$1,283,842). Apartment sales will begin in September.
The Embassy Gardens project is part of a 2000-dwelling masterplan next to the American Embassy.
