Is Typhoon Soudelor makes landfall in Taiwan bringing wind gusts as high as 143 mph, the staff at Taipei 101 stand ready. The ultra-high skyscraper located in Taiwan’s capital city is the second tallest in the world and was designed with severe weather events like Soudelor in mind. Standing at 1,667 feet,.
The LEED platinum certified structure with 101 floors is the largest green building in the world. To meet LEED certification standards, buildings must be constructured with sustainability and renewable, clean energy in mind.

Situated between the 92nd and 87th floors, Taipei 101 sports the world’s largest wind damper. The 660-ton device plays a key role in keeping the building resistant to earthquakes and high winds. The wind damper helps to reduce the swaying of the tower during high winds causing less discomfort for those inside. This feature will be critical as Soudelor comes flying toward the city with sustained winds that reach 120-mph.
The massive wind damper is just one of several features keeping the building safe from Soudelor. According to the Taipei 101’s website, the four-corners of the structure were designed in a “W” shape to disturb airflow and to lessen the swing affected by the strong wind. The tower’s glass curtain wall is also capable of sustaining winds more than twice as strong as those Soudelor is expected to produce.
The building activates a mandatory control center during major events like Soudelor and will put an emergency stop on its elevators, the fastest in the world, if wind speeds reach 114 mph.
In the days leading up to the typhoon, building staff ran full inspections on Taipei 101 while laying out sandbags around exterior trees and public art displays.
