Maharashtra Government to Set up Cyber Labs in all 36 districts

Minister for finance Sudhir Mungantiwaron Monday announced that the state government would start cyber labs in all the 36 districts before February 28, 2016 to prevent cyber crimes. Mungantiwar said that every lab would require Rs21 lakh to get equipped with state of the art technology and gadgets.

Mungantiwar held a meeting with senior officials of the Home department, which included additional chief secretary (Home) KP Bakshi and director general of police Sanjeev Dayal. The meeting discussed growing cyber crimes in the state and the need for the cyber labs in all the districts to curb the same.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Mungantiwar said that he had mentioned the need for cyber labs in his budget speech. He added that the meeting discussed misuse of Facebook by putting photographs of women without their knowledge which results in agony to the family and relatives.

The minister said that the labs would be established in all the 36 districts. While floating the tender for the cyber labs, maintenance for the next five years would also be included in the contract. To set up a cyber lab in Mumbai as early as possible, he said he would be speaking to the Union government for its help.

In Mumbai, 361 cyber crime cases were registered from January till July as compared to 180 cases in the same period last year. Topping the chart are credit card fraud and cloning cases with 123 cases being as compared to 44 cases last year.

At least 70 cases of obscene emails and SMSes were registered this year as compared to 43 registered last year. Number of persons arrested in cyber crime cases this year are 107 as compared to 41 arrested last year.
